The Children’s Museum of Richmond is preparing for the second and final phase of its Dream Big transformation, completing the first major renovation of our Downtown location since it opened in 2000. Building on the exciting new exhibits unveiled in 2026, Phase II will reimagine additional spaces for hands-on learning through play, creating even more opportunities for children and families to explore, discover, and grow.
Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2027 and continue into June 2027 (exact dates to be determined). During this time, the Downtown Museum will remain open, with temporary closures in select areas. Families will continue to enjoy the new Phase I exhibits, along with ongoing programs and activities throughout the Museum.

What is happening at the Downtown Museum?
CMoR is entering the second and final phase of our Dream Big Capital Campaign, completing a multi-year transformation of our Downtown location!
Following the opening of Phase I in June 2026, Phase II will bring new life to additional exhibit spaces and complete improvements in our lobby. While select areas will temporarily close during construction, most of the Museum will remain open, including all the exciting new exhibits introduced during Phase I.
When will construction take place?
The second and final phase of construction is expected to begin in January 2027 and continue into June 2027. Exact start and completion dates are still being finalized.
Will the museum stay open during construction?
Yes! The Downtown Museum will remain open throughout construction, with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and play. A smaller portion of the Museum will be impacted during Phase II, and families will continue to have access to our new Phase I exhibits and other beloved experiences.
Our Chesterfield location will also remain fully operational throughout construction.
Operations During Construction
Will visitors or members need to reserve tickets?
No. Advance reservations are not required during Phase II construction. Families can visit during regular operating hours and purchase admission as usual.
Will admission prices change?
No. Regular admission prices will remain the same throughout construction. Families can continue to take advantage of our existing admission discounts, including reduced admission through Museums for All for eligible families, as well as other applicable discounts and promotions.
Will memberships be extended because of construction?
Memberships will not be extended during Phase II construction. Unlike the first phase, this portion of the renovation will impact a smaller area of the Museum, and members will continue to have access to a wide variety of play experiences, including all the new exhibits introduced during Phase I.
Memberships also continue to provide unlimited admission to both our Downtown and Chesterfield locations, along with all the usual member benefits.

Will field trips still take place?
Yes. Field trips will continue with a limited daily capacity at the Downtown location. Field trip forecasts will continue to be posted on our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) on Mondays to help families plan their visits.

Exhibit & Experience Changes
Which exhibits will be affected?
During Phase II construction, the Playhouse, Stan the T. Rex, and Town Square exhibits (Hospital, Bank, Amtrak, Wegmans, TV Studio, and CarMax) will close as we make way for new imaginative, hands-on learning experiences.
Our lobby and front desk will also undergo renovations, including replacement of the original flooring. As this work progresses, entry into the Downtown Museum may temporarily shift. We will share updates with visitors as plans and dates are finalized.
Will there still be things to do at the Downtown Museum?
Absolutely! There will be plenty for families to enjoy! Families can enjoy the exciting new exhibits that opened during Phase I, including:
- RVA Waterway
- Magic Meadow
- Nature Lab
- Itty Bitty River City
- Skybox Climber
- Grand Cavern
- Seymour Studio
- Carousel
We’ll also continue offering scheduled programs, pop-up activities, and additional hands-on experiences throughout the Museum.
Will the Chesterfield Museum be open?
Yes! Our Chesterfield location will remain fully operational during construction.
Can members visit both locations?
Yes! As always, CMoR memberships are valid and provide unlimited admission at both museum locations.
Will regular weekly and monthly programming still happen at the Downtown location?
Yes! We plan to continue as many of our regular programs as possible during construction. Please visit our Calendar of Events for the most up-to-date schedule and details.
Will Sensory Friendly Nights still take place?
During the construction period (January-June 2027), all Sensory Friendly Nights will be hosted at our Chesterfield location on the third Friday of each month from 5-7 pm. We will begin alternating between both locations again starting in July 2027.

What is the Dream Big Capital Campaign?
The Dream Big Capital Campaign is a multi-phase transformation of our Downtown museum. In partnership with design firm Roto, local architects Quinn Evans, and RMT Construction, we’re creating all-new, inclusive exhibits that inspire learning through play for children ages 0 to 8 and their caregivers.
Phase I opened in June 2026, introducing exciting new experiences including RVA Waterway, Magic Meadow, Nature Lab, Itty Bitty River City, Grand Cavern, Seymour Studio, and the Skybox Climber.
Phase II, anticipated to be completed in June 2027, will bring the transformation to completion with additional exhibits and improvements to our main lobby.
Why is this renovation needed now?
Our museum continues to evolve alongside the families we serve, and it’s time for our spaces to reflect today’s best practices in how children learn through play. The renovation will update exhibits and facilities to incorporate the latest advancements in exhibit design, Universal Design for Learning, and early childhood engagement, ensuring every child and caregiver can explore, create, and connect in ways that are accessible, inclusive, and developmentally rich.
How will the renovation be executed and funded?
The renovation will be completed in stages so the museum can stay open throughout construction. It’s guided by Roto, Quinn Evans, and RMT Construction and supported through a $10 million Dream Big Capital Campaign, funded by generous individuals, foundations, and corporate partners.
