General Information

What protocols and safety measures does the Museum have in place?

The Museum joins 21 Richmond-area cultural institutions on a set of shared values, protocols and safety measures. Please note that the Museum will continue to follow directives set by the Commonwealth of Virginia and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control.

What are your operating hours?

Reservations for timed tickets open Tuesday, September 8.

I do not have a museum membership, can I still visit?

Yes. The Museum will open to the general public on Thursday, September 17. Reservations for timed tickets open Tuesday, September 8.

Will I have to wear a face mask?

Yes. Guests aged 5 and older are required to wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth. A mask is strongly encouraged for children over age 3.

Will there be one-way traffic flow?

Yes. The Museum has created clear play paths for families to follow as well as directional signage that will aide in traffic flow.

Will the shop be open?

Yes.  The shop will be open and available items will be on display.  A Museum team member will assist shoppers with merchandise.

Can I still buy shop items online for curbside pickup?

Yes.  Most shop items are available for purchase online, with curbside pickup at the Museum’s Downtown location.  To shop click here.

Can I still host my birthday party at the museum?

Are people who are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms allowed in the museum?

No. If you or anyone in your group have experienced any of the following with or without aid from medication, please visit another day.

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Pink eye

Are employee temperatures screened?

Yes. Prior to each shift all staff members will be subject to a temperature screening.

What types of payment will you accept at the museum?

While ticket reservation/purchasing is required prior to your visit you are able to purchase items from the shop as well as carousel tickets at the Museum.  Contact-less purchases are strongly recommended; however, the Museum will accept cash as well.

Am I required to sign a waiver?

Yes, at time of ticket reservation/purchase you will be required to sign a waiver.

Timed Ticket FAQs

Does a membership still provide unlimited visits at no cost?

Yes. However, all members must reserve their timed ticket prior to visiting the Museum.

I don’t have a membership, how do I purchase timed tickets?

Ticket reservations will open online on Tuesday, September 8th.

What if I need help reserving/purchasing my timed ticket?

The Museum Team will be happy to assist you.  Please contact membership@childrensmuseumofrichmond.org or 804-474-7003.

Is there a limit on how many tickets I can reserve/purchase?

Members can reserve as many tickets as there are people on the membership. All ticket purchases/reservations are subject to limitations based on: 1) the available number of tickets for the timed session; and, 2) maintaining the Museum required ratio of 1 adult for every 5 children.

What happens if I arrive late for my timed entry?

If you arrive late, you may still enter the Museum and play until the end of the reserved session.

Can I give my reservation/purchase to someone else?

No. Ticket reservations/purchases are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Can I get my reserved/timed ticket in person?

No.  All timed tickets must be reserved/purchased prior to visiting the Museum.

What discounts are being offered?

Discounts will be offered for:

Single Admission and Playdate Passes issued by the Children’s Museum of Richmond will also be honored. 

The appropriate documentation must accompany the ticket holder at the check in window – EBT card, BOA card, etc. To learn more about these programs click the links above.

Food FAQs

Can I bring food and drink?

No. Food and drink is temporarily prohibited at the Museum.  All water fountains will be closed, but water will be available for purchase, if needed.

Membership FAQs

Will my membership be extended because of the Museum closure?

Yes. We are extending all memberships up to the full length of our closure depending on the date of purchase.

Can I renew my membership at the Museum?

Yes.  The Museum prefers you to purchase your membership online.  However, if you would like to purchase or renew in person, during your timed ticket entrance, we would be happy to accommodate.

Where can I find information needed to reserve my membership timed ticket online?

We have introduced digital membership cards through an app called Museum Anywhere. You can download the app for iOS and Android here.

How can I get the Museum Anywhere app?

  1. Visit the app store on your phone
  2. Search “Museum Anywhere” – the resulting app will say “eMembership Card”
  3. Download the app
  4. Search for the “Children’s Museum of Richmond” and you’ll find our logo (Children’s Museum with the red puzzle piece!)
  5. Click “Find My Membership Card”
  6. Enter your primary members’ last name and phone number to look up your specific card.

How do I reserve my tickets?

  1. Downloading the “Museum Anywhere” app gives you access to your Patron ID/membership number, which is required for reserving tickets (see above FAQ for directions on downloading the app)
  2. In the upper right-hand corner of the app, you’ll find a menu that allows you to “Reserve Tickets”
  3. Click the date you are interested in attending, followed by the location, and then session time
  4. Click “login” next to “Member Adult”
  5. If you have an account already in our e-store, login to continue booking your purchase
  6. If you do not have an account in our e-store, click “member” and then enter your Patron ID (you can find it in the app under “Show Membership Card”)
  7. After you create/login to your account in the e-store, you can continue with reserving your tickets

Cleaning FAQs

Are new cleaning procedures in place?

Yes. The following cleaning procedures are in place:

  • The Museum is adhering to all local government and CDC guidelines regarding health and sanitation.
  • The Museum is cleaned with an EPA approved disinfectant that is safe for children and is registered as an effective disinfectant against human coronavirus.
  • New manipulative cleaning rooms have been established where toys and props will be sanitized multiple times each day and in between ticketed sessions.
  • Cleaning wipes are available for families upon request.

Will hand sanitizer be available?

Yes. Hand sanitizing stations and handwashing stations will be available throughout the Museum.  Guests are strongly encouraged to use them often.  Hand sanitization will be required prior to playing in some exhibits. 

Will cleaning wipes be available?

Yes. Cleaning wipes will be available upon request.

What are the cleaning procedures for the restrooms?

All restrooms will be available to visitors, however in order to maintain social distancing, some stalls and sinks will be temporarily closed.  Museum staff will frequently check and sanitize the restrooms and all restrooms will be deep cleaned in between timed ticket sessions.

Museum Exploration FAQs

How is the Museum maintaining social distancing?

The Museum has created clear play paths for families to follow. Directional signage and visual markers will be clearly marked throughout the entire Museum to help families maintain social distancing. In addition, parents and caregivers are required to stay within a hug distance of their children to help maintain group distancing.

Are any exhibits closed?

Yes. Due to size and layout, some exhibits have been temporarily closed. For the most recent updates please visit here.

Is there stroller parking?

No. All guests need to keep personal items with them at all times.  Strollers are permitted but must accompany you through your visit.

Will outdoor space be available?

Yes. At the Museum’s Downtown location the front and backyard will be open this summer. Splashmor will not be operational.

Will the Carousel be open?

Yes.  The carousel will be open with limited seating to ensure social distancing.  Everyone is strongly encouraged to purchase tickets before arriving. Remember all adults stand for free and it is wheelchair accessible!
