General Party Information
When are birthday parties available?
Offered Saturdays and Sundays at three time slots: 10:00–11:30 AM, 12:30–2:00 PM, and 3:00–4:30 PM, at both our Downtown and Chesterfield locations.
How much do birthday parties cost?
The cost is $335 for up to 20 guests, with a discounted rate of $300 for museum members. Full payment is required to secure the reservation.
How long is my party?
Birthday parties include 1.5 hours of private party room time plus all-day play in the Museum for the birthday child and up to 19 guests (20 total, including adults and children, and the party hosts).
Can I invite more than 20 guests?
Yes. You may have up to 45 total attendees. Each additional guest beyond the 20 included is subject to regular Museum admission, unless they qualify for a discount or are an active CMoR member. If overage payments are not settled on the day of the party, the Museum reserves the right to charge the original card on file.
When can I book my party?
Party dates become available on a rolling basis approximately two months prior; e.g., on August 26, reservations are generally open through September and October
Set-Up, Supplies, & Food
When can I set up and clean up?
You may access the party room 15 minutes before your scheduled start time for set-up and 15 minutes after for clean-up.
What’s included in the party room setup?
The Museum provides tables, chairs, and reusable table coverings in your choice of color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, light blue, lavender, lime green, or brown).
Do you provide tableware?
No. The Museum does not supply plates, cups, utensils, cake cutters, or paper products. Please bring your own. A limited number of high chairs are available upon request on a first-come, first-served basis.
Can I bring food?
Yes, outside food is welcome with the following guidelines:
- All food and drink must remain in the party room.
- No crockpots, hot plates, coffee makers, or any appliance with an open flame.
- No refrigerator or microwave is available on site.
- Food may not be delivered.
- A cooler is permitted.
Do you offer food discounts or extras?
Yes! You can receive a 25% discount on Marco’s Pizza carryout orders, available only for confirmed party bookings. You can also add a bouncy house for $120 at the Downtown location (limited availability).
Decorations & Party Guidelines
What decorations are allowed?
You’re welcome to bring simple decorations that do not damage Museum property, such as tabletop decorations, streamers, banners, signs, helium-filled balloons, etc. Decorations must be installed and removed during your party rental time. Painters tape or masking tape is preferred.
What decorations are NOT allowed?
- Silly string, confetti, piñatas, glue guns
- Bubbles, noisemakers, and kazoos
- Balloons (except helium-filled) and confetti balloons
- Open flames, pyrotechnics, or smoke effects
- Two-sided tape
Can I bring in entertainers or outside performers?
No. Outside entertainment, including costumed characters, performers, magicians, or similar services, is not permitted.
Can I use candles?
Open flames, pyrotechnics, and smoke effects are not allowed. A single birthday candle on a cupcake or cake is permitted.
Day-of-Party Details
Where do we park?
Downtown: Free parking is available in the parking deck between the Children’s Museum of Richmond and the Science Museum of Virginia.
Chesterfield: Free parking is available in the large lot shared with the surrounding shopping center.
How do we check in, and who will help us during the party?
Please check in at the front desk upon arrival. A Guest Services team member will escort you to your party space and serve as your liaison throughout your event. While you’ll make your reservation with our Administrative Coordinator, our Guest Services team is fully aware of your booking details and will be available to answer questions and assist as needed.
Can children be dropped off for the party?
No, children may not be dropped off. The Children’s Museum of Richmond requires that a parent or guardian remain with each child during the party and Museum visit.
What is the required adult-to-child ratio?
We require one adult for every five children in attendance.
What do I need to clean up?
Please remove all belongings, decorations, and tape. Trash can be placed in lined bins for Museum staff to remove. Please wipe any spills; staff can assist as needed.
What happens if we go over our time or leave the room messy?
A $50 Overstay and Clean-Up Fee may be charged if the room is not vacated within the allotted time or if it is left excessively messy.
Can I hand out party favors?
Yes, but favors must be distributed at the end of the party.
Is alcohol permitted?
No. Alcohol is not permitted at any time.
Refund and Rescheduling
What if I need to cancel?
- Cancellations made two weeks or more before the party receive a full refund.
- Cancellations within two weeks of the party will be refunded less a $100 fee.
What if the Museum closes due to weather or emergencies?
If the Museum is closed due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, your party will be rescheduled. If rescheduling is not possible, you will receive a full refund.
